Principle Characteristics of the Personalized Learning Model

While variations do exist in how the Personalized Learning model is applied within each school to accommodate the needs of each school's student population and community, all APLUS+ Network Personalized Learning school members are founded upon the comprehensive combination of several basic principles of education excellence. These basic principles are founded upon the latest education research as to how students learn successfully and may be summarized as follows:

Educational Vision and Philosophy

  • The Personalized Learning school supports learning programs and opportunities in multiple learning environments both within and beyond the classroom in accordance with a more “university-style” model, including traditional classroom-based instruction with smaller class sizes; labs; one-on-one learning; distance learning; home-based learning; and community-based learning, with a variety of curriculum resources and learning delivery tools and methodologies.
  • The Personalized Learning School provides individualized learning programs tailored according to the needs of each student, and facilitates development of each student's learning program involving an active partnership between the student, parent or guardian, California certificated teacher, and school.
  • The Personalized Learning School supports one or more learning facilities that accommodate a variety of instruction-related activities, which typically include but are not limited to classes, labs, computer-based learning, tutoring, resource library, and testing and assessment.
  • The Personalized Learning School supports students to fulfill their daily attendance ( ADA ) requirements not solely through seat time, but rather by working as a team (teacher, student and parent) to develop meaningful and varied learning assignments and learning experiences.

Parental Involvement

  • The Personalized Learning School fosters, wherever possible, the close involvement of each student's parent or guardian in the student's learning development and progress. In as much as Personalized Learning requires meaningful, daily, ongoing parent leadership in their child's education, the Personalized Learning School acknowledges and supports the primacy and prerogative of the parents' role in their children's education.
  • The Personalized Learning School supports and/or facilitates parent training and developmental programs that include instruction in student learning style and needs assessment, teaching methodologies, and choices in curricula.

Curriculum

  • The Personalized Learning School supports a variety of curriculum choices in both core and elective subject areas to accommodate the individual learning needs, styles, challenges, interests and aspirations of its students, and to ensure progress towards attaining California State Standards.

Assessment

  • The Personalized Learning School assesses each student's educational needs through both formal and informal evaluation processes. These processes integrate the California State Content Standards; each student's learning style; learning pace; learning strengths; personal, family, and social challenges; and learning interests, passions, and aspirations.
  • The Personalized Learning School integrates a recognized and reliable assessment program to diagnose each student's academic proficiency in core subject areas upon enrollment and either at the conclusion of each school year or upon disenrollment. Students are regularly assessed throughout the year to monitor progress in each core subject area.
  • The school incorporates “multiple measurement” tools to measure and report both individual and school-wide learning progress, which may include the following:
  1. On-going learning records (portfolios)
  2. Report Cards
  3. Work Portfolios
  4. Assessment and accountability programs
  5. API/ASAM/AYP scores

Personnel

  • The Personalized Learning School provides every student a supervising teacher with a valid California Teaching Credential to oversee each student's learning development and/or to teach core subject areas in classroom-based or lab-based learning environments.
  • The Personalized Learning School provides teacher training and developmental programs that include instruction in working with parents, learning styles, needs assessment, teaching methodologies, and choices in curricula.

Accountability

  • The Personalized Learning School serving secondary-level students ensures program quality assurance by fulfilling all requirements for Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) candidacy and accreditation.
  • The Personalized Learning School serving only elementary-level students ensures quality assurance by such methods that may include but are not limited to WASC accreditation, Program Quality Review, or Charter School Development Review.
  • The Personalized Learning School conducts annual, independent, fiscal and programmatic audits to demonstrate the high quality, accountability, and sound management practices of its business operations and educational processes.
  • The Personalized Learning School publishes its School Accountability Report Card and actively seeks community involvement for improvement.
