Homeschooling at Carden Virtual Academy

Homeschooling, also referred to as home study, is an excellent option for youth. Homeschooling allows students to work at a pace that is comfortable for them. It allows for more engaging educational options such as field trips and other enrichment opportunities.

We believe parents are the best educators for their children, but sometimes parents may want the extra support to educate their children. Here at Carden, we strive to provide as many resources as you would like to assist in providing the best education possible to your child.

An Educational Specialist will be assigned to every child to ensure the best educational experiences and opportunities available. They are your liaison between school and home. The Educational Specialist is a highly-qualified, credentialed teacher in the state of California. Their job is the give support in all areas of education. If your child is interested in a particular activity or subject, they will find resources available to pursue that interest.

Educational Specialists are trained to emphasize strengths in your child and establish goals. They will give interest surveys, learning style assessments and listen to your child’s interests. Many of these initial assessments will be done upon the first few meetings.

An ES will meet with the parent/guardian every 20 school day attendance days. These meetings will consist of taking attendance records, learning records and sometimes work samples.

Homeschooling may look a little different when it involves a high school student. We adhere to the graduation laws and make sure your child receives the appropriate credits needed to complete high school. State tests will be proctored by an Education Specialist in all grade levels.

Independent Study at Carden Virtual Academy

Independent Study is a method of learning the content of high school classes through a combination of work done at home and work done in the learning center with a teacher.

Each five-credit semester course is broken down into five separate units. Each unit is completed independently by the student, either online or via workbooks and textbooks. The unit contains readings, vocabulary enrichment, and various activities that teach and reinforce the concepts to the student. If, while doing the unit, students need a bit more support, teachers will be available via phone or IM.

Twice a week, students will attend a one-hour appointment with a teacher. During that appointment, students will receive instruction and clarification on any given part of the unit. Students may make presentations or speeches, depending on the requirements of that particular unit. Students will also take tests on the units completed independently. And, students will receive new units and assignments to complete before the next appointment with a teacher.

The combination of work completed independently, attending teacher appointments, and tests taken earn the student one class credit. A semester class is considered completed when all five units, and the accompanying tests, are finished.

Why Independent Study?

Many students have not found success in traditional schools. Perhaps there are family obligations, or  perhaps the student feels “lost” in classroom of 30 or more students. Or, a student may perform better in school when that student can concentrate on just one or two classes at a time. Or a student may need  just  one teacher who gets to know them, motivates them on an individual level, and guides them toward graduation.  All of these students may find great success in an Independent Study program.

Independent Study students work with a teacher to determine appointment times that work for the student and the student’s family. Students have one teacher that will help them set goals towards graduation and beyond, will guide them through classes, and will get to know then on an individual basis. That teacher will know what motivates each student, what each student’s strength and obstacles are, and provides an  amazing level of support to each student.

Is my student a good fit for Independent Study?

Independent Study provides an extremely personalized method of delivering instruction. It is a good fit for students who are committed to graduating from high school, and need individual help and guidance to do so.
