and the contiguous counties of Nevada, El Dorado, Sacramento, Yuba and Sutter counties
Horizon Charter School (HCS), a California public school, serves approximately 2,900 students in Placer, Nevada, El Dorado, Sacramento, Yuba, & Sutter Counties. As a public school, HCS charges no tuitions or fees. Our personalized learning approach targets students' interests, abilities and aptitudes. From Kindergarten to 12th grade, HCS provides each student with comprehensive quality learning choices and educational pathways. Parents and students partner with highly qualified credentialed teachers in home-based/independent study programs, as well as academies, cooperatives, and Montessori options.
Horizon Charter School's main office is located in Lincoln, CA.
At HCS, we believe every child can excel academically and personally. A Personalized Learning Plan is developed for every child based on California Academic Content Standards and the child’s abilities, interests, and aptitudes. Students are largely responsible for their educational inquiry and pursuits.
HCS is founded on the principle of parental choice. Parents have the opportunity to work with a credentialed teacher in designing a classical course of study or a more personalized, student-centered learning approach. A “one-size-fits-all” curriculum is not required and the school allows for differences in student learning styles, abilities, and interests.
HCS’s focus is developing and implementing homeschool and independent study programs that expand educational opportunities for public school children. In the Homeschool program, parents are the day-to-day teachers of their children under the guidance and support of a credentialed teacher. In the High School Independent Study program known as Additional Educational Services (AESS), students meet weekly or bimonthly with their supervising teacher and study independently on their own. Academic and elective classes are available in several locations. Virtual Learning is widely used, and many Field Trips are offered. Special Education services are provided to eligible students.
The Montessori Community Cooperative is HCS’s site-based K-8 school program located in Lincoln.
