About Our Program

Mattole Valley Charter School believes in honoring individual education choices, and is committed to providing an innovative public education environment for students, their parents, and teachers by empowering them to collaboratively create learning opportunities which will develop responsible and contributing members of society.

MVCS believes in giving students, parents, and teachers the freedom to make responsible and effective decisions and implement educational plans, by providing them with multiple tools, resources and programs.

MVCS believes that the selection of educational plans and opportunities is the right of parents and students with the support of their Independent Study Teacher.

A vital aspect of our success is the pro-active involvement of parents, and the independent study component reflects this with the parents predominantly instructing their students. These families meet with their credentialed teachers a minimum of once every 20 school days – often more frequently.  These meetings consist of teacher, parent, and student who review the work completed during the previous month and make adjustments to the student’s learning plan as needed.

“The community is our classroom” has always been the motto of Mattole Valley Charter School.  The school relies on parent/community resources since the independent nature of the MVCS program necessitates making these connections.  For example, many independent study students participate in courses taught by local businesses, predominantly in the visual and performing arts and physical education arena.  Students also engage in community service projects based on their skills and interests, and some college-bound independent study students attend classes at the local community college and state university.

In order to effectively serve such a large geographic area, MVCS has established several learning centers throughout the area to best meets the needs of each region’s students. These learning centers vary from providing college-style class schedules to a more traditional schoolroom experience that delivers the majority of the mandated instructional minutes. Currently MVCS has twelve learning centers, all offering their own individualized programs along with one resource center located in Eureka.
